JP Morrell

Jean Paul “JP” Morrell has spent his career fighting for policies that put people first. After beginning his legal career as a public defender, JP was elected to the State Legislature in 2006, where he championed protections for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, helped secure unanimous jury verdicts in felony trials, and led efforts to stabilize Louisiana’s state budget and invest in colleges, universities, and hospitals.

Today, JP serves as an At-Large New Orleans City Councilmember, representing the entire city. As Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Utility, Cable, Telecommunications and Technology Committee, he has worked to strengthen utility protections, improve government accountability, and establish the City Council Recreation & Culture Fund, which provides more than $7 million annually to community organizations.

Born and raised in New Orleans’ 7th Ward, JP returned home after college and law school to build his career and serve his community. The son of a career educator and a lawyer who worked his way through law school, JP learned early the importance of education, integrity, and fighting for what is right. Today, he and his wife, Catherine, are raising their three children in Gentilly, where JP remains committed to finding solutions and building a stronger future for New Orleans.
